Prison Families of New York, Inc., based in Albany , NY , provides support, information and advocacy for families and children who have an incarcerated loved one as well as training for those who work with prisoners' families and children and policy work with state, county and local entities. PFNY's approach is strengths-based, rooted in the knowledge that prisoners' children and families are experts on the impact that incarceration has on families and can themselves be agents of social change. PFNY conducts trainings and presentations for schools, human service providers, faith institutions and community agencies, teaching the specifics of advocating for prisoners' families and developing the competency needed for professionals to work effectively with prisoners' children. Founded in 1983 by Alison Coleman, a long-time advocate, trainer, and wife of a prisoner, the organization is also served by Cecily Coleman, a young criminal justice professional who has maintained a special-bond with her father who has been incarcerated for the last 23 years. Cecily's trainings and presentations focus on helping parents, educators, human service providers, clergy and community members to better understand and support children of incarcerated parents.
