Karima Amin

Karima Amin is a native of Buffalo, New York with twenty four years to her credit as a dedicated educator in the Buffalo Public Schools and more than two decades of experience as an artistically accomplished storyteller.
|
|
|
During her twenty four years in the Buffalo Public Schools, she worked as a teacher of Secondary Language Arts, a Home/School Coordinator, and a Multicultural Literature Specialist. Karima effectively utilizes storytelling as a valuable teaching tool to enhance language arts skills, connect literature with social studies, increase multicultural awareness, and teach about the history and culture of African and African American people.

Karima has co-authored with Barbara Dodds Stanford, Black Literature for High School Students (National Council of Teachers of English, 1978). In 1994 Galactic Multimedia produced "You Can Say That Again!", an audio tape, retelling her favorite fables and folktales. In addition to the tales, Karima's commentary on tape includes the history of storytelling, the academic and cultural benefits of storytelling, tips for storytellers and more. Adonis Productions in 1996 chose Karima to be the featured storyteller in their video, "Kwanzaa: An African American Celebration".

Karima is the author of The Adventures of Brer Rabbit and Friends, a children's book, published by Dorling Kindersley of London, England (1999). Her folktale re-tellings of "Wiley and the Hairy Man" and "The Legend of Annie Christmas" have been published in African American Children's Stories: A Treasury of Tradition and Pride, and anthology of stories, songs, and biographies (Publications International, 2001). Two original stories by Karima, "Grandma's Garden" and "The Prettiest Picture", have been published in My First Treasury: Grandma Loves You, a board book for
young children, ages 0-6 (Publications International,
2003).

On local radio station 93.7 WBLK-FM every Monday morning at 8:15am, she shares both original and traditional tales.
